I'm normally the first one to complain that right after Christmas, even though winter has just begun, everyone starts thinking about Spring and gardening. But this year, although I'm enjoying the colder-than-usual weather we're having lately, I'm also ready to get a jump-start on gardening. So yesterday I got out in the back yard and plotted out where I want the garden to be and began to loosen up the dirt. Today Miles went out with me and helped me pull weeds. He asked to have his own garden, so we chose a spot for it.
My plan is to get all the weeds out early and get some lettuce seeds started inside in egg cartons and yogurt cups. Then in a few weeks, we can plant the lettuce seedlings, since lettuce likes cold weather. There's nothing like fresh lettuce for a salad! I want to grow enough this year to have a fresh salad every day if we want it, while it's still growing. Once it gets too hot, it won't grow anymore. Too bad you can't freeze it!
